Autosobriety, a responsibility programme in partnership with UNITAR

Driving after drinking alcohol significantly increases the risk of a crash and the severity of the crash. In high-income countries about 20% of fatally injured drivers have excess alcohol in their blood, and this figure goes up to 69% in some low-and-middle-income countries. Most countries around the world has set a maximum BAC for drivers, enforcement and deterrent only are not sufficient in changing drivers attitude and behaviours towards drinking and driving. We needed to educate drivers.

Pernod Ricard has always been committed to responsible drinking, and in particular to the protection of young adults against the harm of excessive drinking. Educate young drivers to the risks of drinking and driving was a natural step from the Group

Autosobriety aims at equipping road users with science-based knowledge on alcohol and it impact on the body and the ability to drive, to empower them to make right decisions on the roads.

We wanted to focus on students of driving schools: when you learn how to drive, you should also learn not to drink and drive! Very quickly, it was expanded to other interested groups such as government officials, professional drivers, etc.

We wanted Autosobriety to be accessible by all, fun and engaging. Its core assets consist in an interactive online course UNITAR Learning Platform a microlearning course EdApp platform, and a Virtual Reality video UNITAR Youtube platform, all available in the local languages

After a first roll-out of Autosobriety in the Durban province in South Africa, the programme is now present in 11 countries around the world (see UNITAR website

Significant progress in the reduction of alcohol-related road crashed can only be achieved through stronger national leadership, global cooperation, implementation of evidence-based strategies, and engagement with all relevant actors including the private sector
